Title: Housing First Implementation in Santa Barbara County

Day: Wednesday, June 19

Times: 9:30-11:30am (Stakeholders) and 1:00-4:00pm (Service Providers) 

Location: Santa Ynez Valley Marriott, 555 McMurray Rd, Buellton.
Course Description: Dr. Sam Tsemberis founded Pathways to Housing in New York City in 1992 based on the belief that housing is a human right and focused on serving individuals experiencing homelessness and who have mental health and addiction problems. At Pathways, Tsemberis developed the consumer-driven evidence-based Housing First model that provides immediate access to permanent supportive housing with wrap around services and support.  Dr. Tsemberis leads Pathways Housing First, which trains direct service organizations, conducts research, and informs policy makers on ending homelessness.  Dr. Tsemberis is also on the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. He has published numerous articles and book chapters on these topics, including the Housing First Manual (Hazelden Publishing, updated in 2015). Dr. Tsemberis is continuously engaging with communities and agencies considering Pathways' model nationally and around the world.

This training is open to all staff and stakeholders, but is likely best suited for homeless service and housing provider managers, supervisors and frontline staff.

Course Description: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a "collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change" (Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change, 3rd Edition). This evidence-based approach is valuable for practitioners in health and human services who want to work more effectively in helping clients make positive changes related to their health, behavioral health, housing status, and overall wellbeing.

Title: Soar Training (ongoing) 
Course Description: The SAMHSA SOAR TA Center offers two Online Courses that train case managers to assist individuals to apply for
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), disability income benefit programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Both courses offer comprehensive information about the disability determination process as well as the SOAR Critical Components of completing SSI/SSDI applications. Each course includes seven classes with articles and “Try-Its” to test your knowledge as you go. There is also a Practice Case - a unique opportunity to put what you are learning into practice by completing an SSI/SSDI application packet for a fictional adult applicant or an SSI application for a fictional child applicant.  We provide the progress notes, medical records, interview videos, and all the forms you need to complete and submit your Practice Case Application Packet to the SAMHSA SOAR TA Center for individualized review and feedback. Enrollment in these courses is FREE and open to anyone who would like to learn more about SOAR and SSI/SSDI applications.  However, the completion of the Practice Case Application Packet is geared toward those case managers who will be assisting adults and/or children with applications once they complete the course.
